Thorn Lighting are stepped in the history of their sector and are getting ready to celebrate their 80th anniversary later this year.
The brand started life as the Electric Lamp Service Company Limited, established by Sir Jules Thorn, on 29 March 1928.
Their first order of business was to ship in incandescent filament lamps and radio valves from the continent, but increased import duties made them want to become the best of British.
Thorn brought its first lighting factory in 1932 and was one of the first of its kind to go public in 1936, under a new name of Thorn Electrical Industries.
They survived the Second World War to become one of the mainstays of the lighting industry and merged with other companies when it made sense to break into new markets.
The Zumtobel Group started to invest heavily in Thorn at the turn of the century, with a new millennium bringing with it a focus on technological innovation.
The noughties and this decade retain that vision and Thorn, still a part of the Zumtobel Group, remains a globally trusted supplier of outdoor and indoor luminaires with integrated controls.
Their state-of-the-art research and development facilities combine the latest light source technology with specialist expertise in optical and luminaire design.
Cost-effective lighting is another target and Thorn promise savings without compromising on performance or efficiency through their products.
Their high-performance solutions can be found on roads, through tunnels, offices or in places of learning or sport.
Luminaires from Thorn played their part in the refurbishment of one of Newcastle’s most-loved historic buildings, the Old Post Office.
The £5.8million project was to upgrade the Grade II listed building, which was built in the 1870s, for construction experts NBS, who are based in the city.
Thorn’s Planor Suspended, Panor Wall, Glacier LED and Chalice LED luminaires are on show throughout, to keep all of the space well-connected and sustainable.
Thorn continue to be the lighting people in an ever-changing world, a far cry away from their humble beginnings. They are standing the test of time.
