BISCA – What’s in a Name?

Bisca began life in 1994, in a barn just north of Glasgow, and, like many design students, bespoke furniture was Richard’s first business venture.  Whilst exhibiting at 100% Design in London in the mid ‘90s, a property developer asked him if he could design a staircase for his own home.

‘I knew little about staircase design at that time, but of course, I said “yes”,’ confesses Richard.

The developer must have liked the work because further staircase commissions for his property portfolio followed and, a couple of years later, Bisca had – in Richard’s words – ‘a very nice collection of unique staircase designs’.

The business began getting enquiries from other people who had heard about, or seen the staircases, and appreciated the design, quality and bespoke nature of what they do.

Bisca has earned a soaring reputation for creating beautiful bespoke staircases and, although the team enjoy doing one-off architectural pieces including sculptures, lighting, entrance gates, doors and canopies, the majority of their time is spent in the design and manufacture of bespoke staircases and balustrades for clients in the UK and overseas.

BISCA is an acronym of Brass, Iron, Steel, Copper & Aluminium

The name BISCA, is an acronym of Brass, Iron, Steel, Copper and Aluminium, is indicative of some of the materials Richard was using in the early days. Today Bisca’s the portfolio of finishes is much broader and also includes stone, glass, timber and bronze and Corian.

Using a complimentary combination of traditional and modern skills, together with the resourcefulness and desire to work with new and unusual materials, has given BISCA the reputation of being a company willing and able to take on the most challenging of projects. Constantly pushing the boundaries with materials, design, manufacturing and craftmanship has transformed BISCA into the company it is today.

The design and workshop teams work closely together, and this gives the designers intimate knowledge of what can and can’t be done with the materials used. Having in-house forge and ironmongery capabilities means that BISCA can combine steel, stainless steel, bronze and other semi-precious metals with cutting edge staircase and balustrade design.

Having progressed from one man and his paper sketches to a design studio with CAD technology, cutting-edge machinery and a traditional forge, BISCA is now recognised as one of the leading bespoke staircase manufacturers in the country.

The ethos behind the acronym B.I.S.C.A. was to reflect the ability of a company offering all mediums in its design and providing clients with a one stop shop. An ethos which holds true today.
